骨质疏松症(osteoporosis)是由于多种原因导致的骨密度和骨质量下降,骨微结构破坏,造成骨脆性增加,从而容易发生骨折的全身性骨病。骨质疏松症分为主要与绝经和老年有关的原发性骨质疏松症和由多种疾病引起的继发性骨质疏松症两大类。骨密度正常值(T 值)参考范围在-1 至+1 之间;当 T 值低于-2.5 时为骨质疏松;当 T 值低于-1 并不低于-2.5 时为骨质减少(osteopenia)。

骨质疏松症导致的疼痛本身可降低患者的生活质量,脊柱变形、骨折可致残,使患者活动受限、生活不能自理,给个人、家庭和社会带来沉重的经济负担。基于该疾病可能导致的后果,如何控制危险因素以减缓骨密度减少的速度?何种患者需要接受治疗?预防和治疗的要点是什么?

Johns Hopkins 任内科老年病医学教授、国内老年病学会顾问和协和老年病医学科发起人。

Sean Xiao Leng, Editor-in-Chief, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology, Department of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University , USA.

Dr. Sean Leng is a board certified geriatrician and Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He also obtained a Ph.D. in molecular virology and immunology at Texas A&M University Health Science Center, after which he completed a research fellowship in cytokinology and immunology at Yale University School of Medicine.

In addition to clinical care provided for older patients, Dr. Leng conducts translational aging research in his laboratory focusing on age-related immunosenescence and its potential causes and consequences, including inflammation and immune remodulation in the geriatric syndrome of frailty, influenza immunization, chronic CMV infection, and HIV and aging. He has also developed major international collaborative initiatives with China in geriatrics and gerontology.
